McDonald’s food to carry nutrition labels October 29, 2005

By 2006, McDonald’s will carry nutrition information on the packaging of most food items. The nutrition labels, according to a New York Times article, will tell customers exactly how many calories, grams of fat, protein, carbohydrates and sodium are in McDonald’s quarter pounder and other food products. I’m not sure this is information that my husband, a McDonald’s fan, would like to have.

Dylan and classmates ‘follow the leader’ October 28, 2005

What do you get when you ask over 70 six-year-olds and seven-year-olds to dance to upbeat hip-hop music. Chaos, what else? And photos good for a few laughs.

My son and his classmates and 50 or so preparatory pupils danced to the “Follow the Leader” song in last Friday’s intramurals of the Science and Technology Education Center (Stec) in Lapu-Lapu City.

Health care provider issues

Filed under: Health, fitness — engkanta @ 12:01 pm

I just ended an exasperating (on my part, at least) phone conversation with a representative of the health maintenance organization (HMO) providing health insurance to our company. Our HMO, ValuCare, had initially refused to cover a fasting blood sugar (FBS) test that my gynecologist recommended I undergo.

The silly reason given by our HMO was that the doctor who recommended the test was not in ValuCare’s list of accredited doctors.

This is not my first experience with the unreliability of this HMO. In August, it refused to honor my sick son’s coverage for reasons it only knows. Last week, I brought my sons to Valucare’s accredited testing center for the yearly regular medical check-up, which would only run from October 13 to 31, only to be refused by the center because of some fiasco that was either the fault of my company or the HMO or both.

I love to take photographs and my sons are my favorite subjects. I find these photos of Lennon really nice. These were taken near our home earlier today.

Being makabayan (nationalistic) October 11, 2005

Filed under: Education, Family, Parenting — engkanta @ 7:22 pm

A chaotic sight of mothers, yayas, and students striving to finish their Makabayan (Civics and Culture) assignment within the lunch break greeted me when I arrived at my son’s school today.

Thankfully, Dylan did his assignment–a chart of Philippine symbols like its flag, national costume, national dance, national hero, national bird, national language, etc.–the night before and so he was spared the aggravation of doing it in one hour’s time.
