Painting with a finger July 13, 2005
My son Dylan had to use his fingers to paint a picture using watercolor in school today. He did not have any watercolor and brush and forgot to ask me to buy him these things. His teacher told him and his classmates the other day that they were going to need the materials for an art project today.
His babysitter, who brings him lunch everyday, told me when she came back home at around 2 p.m. that Dylan had to share his seatmate’s watercolor but since there was no extra brush he improvised and used his fingers.
When these things happen, I’m the one who’s usually bothered. I plagued his sitter with questions. Did Dylan manage to finish his work? Was he not at all upset that he was the only without a watercolor and a brush? How did his work turn out? Was he still working when you arrived with his lunch?
Not satisfied, I called my son from work at 7 p.m. and I ask him these questions again. He is only 7 but it’s usually my son who ends up assuring me that no, he did not feel the need to cry because he was the only one without a watercolor and brush and that yes, he did just fine.
Sometimes, I’d wonder at the combination of genes and environment that has turned him into such a perfect little boy. A feat that sadly I could not replicate with my other son.
